Ready to show winter who’s boss? These tried-and-true tips will help you stay warm, safe, and on top of the weather.
Do:
- Keep extra fuel filters in your truck—you never know when your truck may gel up.
- Plug your truck in any time you can.
- Avoid idling.
- Make sure your inverters are not blocked or covered and have space to breathe (all year round!).
- Clean off headlights and taillights regularly to ensure maximum visibility.
- Stock your truck with two to three days’ worth of supplies (warm gear, nonperishable food, water) in case you become stuck and need to wait out the weather.
- Be on guard when getting out of the truck—steps can be super slippery!
Don’t:
- Park facing the wind. It can cause ice to build up on your truck’s critical components.
- Shut your engine off when it’s below 11 degrees. If your truck is struggling to stay warm while idling, don’t be afraid to bump up the idle. This will help keep it warm.
- Ignore your truck if it’s been off for an extended period in the cold. When you start it up again, let it idle for at least an hour or two to warm up properly. Plan ahead!
- Run a microwave, coffee pot, and TV at the same time, as this could overload your truck’s electrical system. This is true for all seasons, not just winter!
Winter requires preparation, awareness, and a little extra caution. By following these dos and don’ts, you’ll be better equipped to handle whatever the cold weather throws your way.
