Stay cool when working in the heat!
Are you out securing a step deck load? In the back of a dry van making sure your load is secure?
Below are several tips you can use to help stay cool and avoid heat exhaustion!
Tip 1 – Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate
Start drinking water even before your day gets underway to help you stay hydrated! If you wait until you feel thirsty before you drink water, you may be well beyond the time when you need to replenish fluids in your system. Drink small amounts often before working, while working and after working!
Tip 2 – Dress appropriately for the weather
Keeping yourself protected from the sun’s rays can be especially important! Wear cool, loose-fitting clothing that is light-colored and made of fabric that is breathable. It can be tempting to wear shorts and cut off shirts leaving skin exposed, however this can lead to severe sunburns or heat exhaustion.
Over the years tip 3 has become more and more evident!
Tip 3 – Let your body acclimate
Once you are done working outside, turn your air conditioning on low and hop in the truck! DO NOT turn your air conditioning all the way cool and blast it on you!! This can cause upper respiratory issues!
Warning signs of heat exhaustion:
Nausea/Vomiting
Faint or Dizziness
Excessive sweating
Cool, pale skin
Muscle Cramps
Rapid Pulse
Headache

Don’t ignore the warning signs! Paying attention and have a plan to stay cool and hydrated!
